Hey everyone, T here...Monday morning started out with an early trek over to Vatican City with plans to view St. Peter's Cathedral. I'm not sure I've ever seen SO many tour groups in my entire life. They are always moving too slowly, or too quickly, and it can become quite the challenge to maneuver around large groups of humans. It's really interesting because all the tour guides carry these pointers that have some sort of flag, scarf, or ribbon tied around it so that the members of their group can follow them. As we were walking up to the line for the Cathedral, we noticed this very large tour group in front of us and we knew we did not want to get stuck behind them. So we busted our lil booties and jumped right in front of them. Ha ha! High fives for us!
Upon entering the Cathedral, your mind is totally blown. It is enormous, colorful, gigantic, and overwhelming. It really is a place you could go to day after day and feel like you've never seen it before. I think the most astounding thing for me was to stare at these colorful and detailed scenes covering entire walls, and then reminding myself that it is ENTIRELY a mosaic. In fact, every scene in there is. It's ASTOUNDING! The tiles in these pieces are sooo tiny and it's simply baffling.
After the Cathedral, we made our way back to our hostel to rest for a bit. After relaxing, we decided we needed to buy more groceries, so we headed out for the store. Well, somewhat unfortunately, both of the grocery stores that we knew of were closed. However, the good part is that as we were walking by one of the closed grocery stores, we saw this little hole-in-the-wall pizzeria packed with people.
Ok, time-out. If there's ONE thing I've learned about finding delicious foreign food, it's to go wherever the locals are because they know what's best.
And ya know what, the little mass of people inside that pizzeria don't lie...it was divine! They were thin crusted, undeniably fresh, and cheaper than you would believe. They have several different kinds behind a glass counter and you just point to the one that you want, and through sound effects and hand gestures, you indicate what size of piece you want them to cut off for you. They weigh it, you hand over a few euros, and they hand you this square of hot pizza wrapped in butcher paper. You barely make it out the door before you're shoving it in your mouth...it is THAT good!
Kyla had a piece that was sausage and some sort of unknown leafy vegetable..(please see pic below, Kyla's on the left, Tibby's on the right)...can anyone tell what that veggie is?? I had a piece that was simple, yet so fresh and filling. It had a thin layer of sauce, plenty of stringy cheese, and chunks of tomato and basil leaves to top it off! "Yum" doesn't even begin to cover it!
(We aren't sure what the other thing is called, but it was basically a breaded ball of marinara sauce and rice)
After devouring our pizza in a piazza, we began our night walk over to see the Colosseum all aglow with lights. Oh my my my...it is so beautiful and peaceful when it's all lit up! We took our time slowly strolling all the way around it and soaking it in. Ah, it's so good to be in Roma!
And the finish the day, we had to grab some gelato that didn't disappoint. Seriously America, we NEED this stuff in the States!!
