So today is going to be a very short entry - which is actually kind of a nice change of pace! But it's mainly because I didn't really do anything. I mean, not very interesting at least. In the morning I slept in and only got up because our little TV randomly turned on cartoons - the second time it's done that this week! Needless to say, Sabrina (who was also being a bedhead) and I freaked out a little and I simply couldn't go back to sleep....so we got up and made omelets instead! Actually we just made one big one and even though one egg had weird things floating in it and another one just rolled off the counter, eventually we got our act together and I even flipped the delicious beast just like a pro!
Then we made some toast and ate together before my roomie ran off to meet our classmate MaShawn at the Roman amusement park, Rainbow MagicLand!
....ohhh yyeeaaahhh....
I, however, didn't really have any interest in riding any magical rollercoasters (shocking, I know!), so instead I decided to stay home and plan out more of my trip to Greece. And I got most of it worked out, thank heavens!
But eventually I simply got bored of sitting in our apartment, so I wandered outside and around our neighborhood, getting quite lost at some points, but eventually I found my way into the Piazza di Santa Maria and got to go inside the beautiful basilica from which the piazza gets its name. The church is one of the oldest in Rome (floorplans date from around the 4th century), and it features beautiful 13th century mosaics inside and out! It was so beautiful, and so close to where we live!
...this was so precious - hundreds of tiny hand-written notes and prayers stuffed into and around this statue...
...these were the walls in the covered portico outside the church entrance - they are dozens of fragments of ancient Roman funeral markers - many are roughly carved and even have little drawings as well as the Latin text...
....so cool!!
After I explored the basilica, I plopped down on the steps of the piazza's lovely fountain and simply watched the people walk by and the sun melt into the horizon. There were lovers next to me, older Italian women in their heels and pearls, a few bambini running around with kickballs and exhausted grandmothers, some weary but satisfied tourists, and kids like me - just soaking up the thick evening air.
And there was even some mood music provided by this awesome little trio who were doing some excellent renditions of classics like The Girl From Ipanema, etc.
...love it!!
Then after it started to get dark, I headed back home and made a tasty little salad with some leftover veggies, flakes of parmesan cheese, and fresh balsamic.
...it was quite tasty and nice after so much bread and pasta! Though I'm definitely not complaining. ;D
And now MaShawn is about to come over and sleep on our couch so that the girls can catch an ungodly 4:50 AM train to Pompeii tomorrow morning! It goes without saying that I will be unconcious at that hour, but I do plan to get out and see a museum or two tomorrow before school starts back up again next week! ...our last week! Can't even believe it!
But before I get too emotional, I have to answer the call of our store-bought nutella and biscotti that is so patiently waiting for me. And so with that folks, I shall say goodnight!
